Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (ET) on ABC
Crazy one liners? Check. Absurd situations? Check. Six lovable, goofy dorks? Check. That can only mean one thing. One of the underdog comedies of television is back in session. ABC’s Happy Endings returns with a bang on Tuesdays and we get to see our beloved group of six friends back in action.
The episode starts off with Penny ultimately getting put in a full body cast and, of course, hilarity ensues. Casey Wilson definitely will do anything that is thrown at her. It’s nice to see her physical comedy chops taken advantage of. She definitely has what it takes to say the one-liners or utilize her physical side. Or better yet, as in this episode, mold both of them together. MVP of the night hands down goes to Casey Wilson in the upper body cast.
We get to see Brad and Jane deal with Brad’s job loss, in very different ways. It is nice to see the two of them together with their own storyline. They definitely have chemistry and we can tell that they really do care about each other. Whereas the storyline with Penny and Max has more comedy in it, there are some scenes with Brad and Jane that have a touch more drama too them. It leaves us to wonder if perhaps the writers are going to try to round out the series this season by giving us that slight drama factor, letting the characters deal with more true to life things, while keeping its zany touch.
The last story line arc deals with Alex and Dave, who continually refer to their dating as ‘totally cazsh’. It’s nice to see Alex and Dave back together again, but the real question is whether they are going to stay together. In all honesty, the Alex and Dave storyline is the weakest of the three, although Elisha Cuthbert does have some funny one-liners and scenes. She’s very much coming into her own and growing; we can tell that she’s officially settled in the role and knows how she’s going to play and deliver Alex’s lines. Let’s just hope that being in a relationship doesn’t clip the MVP wings that she won last season.
All in all, the first episode of season three doesn’t disappoint. The writers and creators know what the show is and where it stands, and from the weird quirkiness of last night’s episode we know nothing much is going to change. However, it is interesting to note that several storyline arcs from last season do carry over. Which makes us wonder if the writers are planning to make more connected episodes this season? We will just have to wait until next week to find out.
