5) Spectrals “A Heartbeat Behind”
Directed by Ozzie Pullin
Although this isn’t the most exciting music video, it’s most definitely the best video Spectrals have produced. It’s made of mid-shots of the location and the band – if it wasn’t for the colour it wouldn’t really be that engaging. It’s shot on Canvey Island which is beloved location of such legends as Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and Graham Parker who are all Spectrals influences.
4) A-Trak “Jumbo”
Directed by Jason Miller
Ever since watching the impressive, time-consuming video for A-Trak’s “Tuna Melt“, I’ve wanted to check out more of his stuff. This week he released, a less impressive but still cool, trippy video for track “Jumbo” that features producer Galantis as a one-man basketball team. It’s a cool concept; I wish I had the patience to make something as cool as this.
3) Cloud Control “Dojo Rising”
Directed by Ian Pons Jewell
Cloud Control are back and although I’m bitterly disappointed by this new, completely different sound the video is pretty good. It’s the strangest narrative I’ve seen for a music video in a long time – a clown is on the run after ruining a birthday party. Shot in Bolivia, vibrant colours are a predominant feature of “Dojo Rising”.
2) Fat Tony “Hood Party”
This is a really refreshing approach to the medium that is music video. Upon first viewing, it really reminded me of the Chat Roulette improv videos. “Hood Party” is essentially a Google Hangout video driven mainly by Fat Tony and his rapper friends Kool A.D. and Despot. A bunch of other people pop up in their respected windows and the video ends really well.
1) AlunaGeorge “You Know You Like It”
Directed by Sammy Rawal
When this track first emerged, it was accompanied by a simple, presumably low budget, black-and-white video of frontwoman Aluna Francis performing. To mark the re-release of the single on July 22, AlunaGeorge have a brand new, better full-colour video. It consists of the duo (although you would think she’s a solo artist) and a group of partying hipsters in an empty pool. It’s got a serious 90s feel to it, and it’s everything a performance driven music video should be. There’s never a dull moment when there’s interestingly framed shots, quick cuts and a good colour palette – her dancing is better suited in this video.
