James Gordon has not yet been freed from prison. Let that sink in for a moment. His interrogator at Blackgate Prison is not a fellow police officer but his son, James Gordon Jnr. While the two men have a heart-to-heart, Stephanie Brown loses a friend and Vicki Vale begins to hunt down the Batman, and slowly these individual tales take on lives on their own.
Batman writer Scott Snyder is only one of several talents behind Batman Eternal, a year-long weekly series that runs parallel to Batman. Because of the weekly format, the separate stories can take a slower pace than a reader would normally expect, and having each writer in the series tackle a different genre allows for greater variety in tone and content. It remains to be seen if having more than one writer and style is a trick that can be pulled off throughout the entire run, but at the moment, it seems to be a case of so far, so good.
