In series of tweets reporting from their panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures just gave some of the best news that any Godzilla fans could hope for. After a brief video message from Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, who could not attend due to his hectic Star Wars schedule, three classic monsters’ names were revealed on screen and are now set to appear in Godzilla 2. Those monsters are Mothra, Rodan, and the three headed King Ghidorah. Anyone who is at all familiar with the franchise knows these names all too well and will most likely get chills just thinking about what Edwards will do with these creatures. All these kaiju appeared alongside Godzilla in Ishirō Honda’s 1964 classic, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. In another tweet, Legendary also confirmed that other well known beasts will join the franchise in later installments.

Rodan originally appeared in his only solo film in Honda’s 1956 feature Rodan, before becoming a full time supporting character in multiple Godzilla films. Mothra first appeared in her own film in 1962 in Honda’s Mothra, then battled the king of the monsters in 1964’s Mothra vs. Godzilla, then many other Godzilla films, and her own trilogy in the 90s. Ghidorah, possibly Godzilla’s most iconic foe, has also appeared in many Godzilla and Mothra films. There is no release date for Godzilla 2, but it can’t come soon enough.
