Judd Apatow and Laura Dern touch down for football comedy

Hollywood’s response to the general public’s calls for more gender diversity and strong representations of women in film has been to simply remind the world that women can play with the boys too, from female Ghostbusters to female superheroes to now female football fans.

Laura Dern is now producing a comedy about “obsessive female football fans” (yes, they exist) along with Judd Apatow and drafting Pam Brady (Team America: World Police) to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The as of yet untitled comedy is originally a story idea from Dern, and were she to share co-writing credits it would be a nice consolation prize for fans of her short lived HBO show Enlightened. No word yet on a director or a cast, but Apatow is currently wrapping on Trainwreck, another female fronted comedy written by and starring Amy Schumer.

Here’s hoping it has some of the dramatic nuance of the Patton Oswalt led Big Fan, or at the very least becomes a female-sports movie mainstay like A League of Their Own.
