‘Dumb and Dumber To’ takes top spot at the weekend box office

Dumb and Dumber To

The top three films at the US box office this weekend are a sequel, an adaptation, and an original property. Leading the way is new release Dumb and Dumber To, the sequel to the Farrelly Brothers’ 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. The third film in the franchise saw original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles, and audiences responded well to the return of the duo, to the tune of $38 Million. Last weekend’s box office champion Big Hero 6 fell to second place, making $36 million over the weekend, a drop of just under 36% from its opening numbers last weekend. Christopher Nolan’s science fiction epic Interstellar rounds out the top three, making just under $30 million in its second week.

Beyond the top three, there’s a sharp dropoff in the box office totals, with Beyond the Lights coming in at $6.5 million. The latter is the only other weekend debut to crack the top ten, as the rest of the list is rounded out by veteran features. David Fincher’s Gone Girl continues to hold strong, coming in at number 5, and the rest of the list includes films such as David Ayers’ Fury and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman taking the tenth spot with a weekend gross of $2.45 million.

Among limited openings, Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher made $48,000 per screen, garnering $288,113 over the weekend despite playing on only six screens. Tommy Lee Jones’ western The Homesman took home $48,000 from four screens, while Jon Stewart’s directorial debut Rosewater crossed the million dollar mark in its first weekend, garnering $1.2 million.
