Russo Brothers to direct ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Following rumors this morning coming out of Badass Digest, Deadline has now confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct The Avengers: Infinity War – Parts I and II.

The Russo Brothers are currently on board to film Captain America: Civil War, and though they haven’t filmed a frame of the film, Marvel is clearly going all in on the filmmaking duo that first joined the Marvel team with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, arguably the most distinctive and “director” friendly entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This effectively confirms the rumors from recently that Joss Whedon was done with Marvel following The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But I think I’m more grappling with the idea that some former directors of Arrested Development and Community are now behind the biggest film franchise in the world.

Badass Digest added that although no writer has officially been announced, Marvel is courting the writers for all three Captain America films, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Both Avengers films are currently slated for May 2018 and 2019, with several more Marvel films arriving in the interim. Civil War is one of those, currently slated for May 2016. For that movie, the Russos will have the luxury of juggling a Spider-Man cameo, so clearly whatever plans they have for that film will have ripple effects for the Russos’ Avengers follow-up.
