Cue another female-centered comedy spin-off.
It seems like Sony may want to spin-off another one of their comedy franchises with 21 Jump Street being the latest pick. Tracking Board reported on Tuesday (and it was later confirmed by The Wrap) that the studio has plans to spin-off the franchise with a female team. Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs of Broad City fame are set to pen the script.
This news comes after Sony already announced a female spin-off of Ghostbusters with Paul Feig directing and a cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. This was followed by another male-centered sequel with 21 Jump Street star Channing Tatum rumored to star in it with the Russo brothers producing.
The Jump Street franchise has been popular so far and a third movie has been hinted at, but not confirmed yet. One would hope that the masterminds behind the first two films, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, would be working on the film in some capacity, but the two probably won’t direct since they have a busy schedule that includes a possible job with Warner Bros. on The Flash and a Spider-Man animated movie with Sony.
The fact that writers from Braod City are attached is a very good thing as that show continues to churn out some quality comedy. Maybe a dream would be that Ilana and Abby from the show would join as the new cop duo.
The most logical path would be incorporating Dakota Johnson and Rye Rye’s characters from the previous films. Johnson is on the cusp of mega-star after Fifty Shades of Grey and could be a big draw, and it would allow the studio to keep some continuity between the two franchises.
