‘Dying Light’s Expansion Pack is just too dang big

Dying-Light-1

Dying Light is probably one of the best surprises to come out this year, despite arriving in January. For so many reasons, the game simply should not have worked, being yet another zombie game released into an already insanely saturated market is just the tip of the problematic iceberg for this game. It’s also a first-person parkour platformer, something that’s rarely worked, and even when it does it’s kind of terrible. Even worse, it was a follow-up to Dead Island, a series that’s never really managed to receive any praise other then a muted “yeah, s’alright” even through two main games and a shocking amount of spinoffs.

Despite all of that, Dying Light is a really, really good game, highly recommended to anyone not burnt out on zombie smashing. It’s combat is quick and visceral, the parkour works about as well as you’d want it to, and it’s story is perfectly acceptable, given the low standard in most zombie games.

Like most games in the past few years, of course there was a season pass for sale too, and while the first bits of DLC are mostly throw-away, an extra dungeon and a collection of co-op challenges, Techland promised that the third DLC, titled The Following, would add substantial content to the game. From what we’ve gathered from trailers, this content includes a new play area, vehicles, new weapons, and a new story about protagonist Kyle Crane. It’s shaping up to be an impressive bit of DLC, a nice change of pace from the constant stream of cosmetic packs or one-off dungeons we usually see in games today.

And that’s sort of the problem Techland has run into, The Following is just to darn big to release for it’s current price. According to them at least. The direct quote from Techland is

“Due to the increased scale of the project, we needed to revise the pricing that we announced back in August. We didn’t want this to come as a surprise to you, so we’re announcing it in advance. This price change will not affect players who already own the Season Pass.”

So yes, the price is increasing. The Following was originally set as a $15 pack, but will now run you $20. The season pass price is also increasing, up to $30. However, Techland is playing this smart, and the changes, specifically for the season pass, won’t take effect till Dec. 8, meaning if you want to snag the DLC at a better price you have two weeks to do so.

All things considered, this isn’t to bad. Dying Light is an amazing game, so the promise of this much extra content seems pretty great, especially since Techland has also been quoted saying they could release The Following as a stand-alone game, it has so much content. What do you think, is increasing the price of DLC to match the size of the content okay, or should Techland stick to the original price set a few months ago? Let us know in the comments below!
