I just finished binging Younger on Amazon Prime. I really enjoyed the show. I even learned a bit about the publishing world, assuming how the show portrayed publishing is somewhat realistic.
Younger TV show is a comedy romance series that was first aired in 2015. The show is about a single mother, Liza Miller, who is mistaken to be younger than she is, and it gives her an idea to start her life over. She starts her love life and her career as a twenty-six-year-old. In reality, Liza is 40 years old.
She has a teenage daughter and is divorced. Her marriage failed because her ex-husband had a gambling addiction. The show has seven seasons, with the 7th season being the last one. The show was first aired on 31st March 2015, and the 7th season ended on 10th June 2021.
When Liza decides to reboot her career as a twenty-six-year-old, she lands a job in publishing, which has always been her dream job. At first, she successfully conceals her actual age, but she realizes that her secret is hurting those closest to her as time goes by. Therefore, her plan is not as perfect as she thought it was. As the season wraps up, Liza, through her personal and professional lows and highs, is learning that the truth is so much better compared to fiction.
The show is based on the 2005 novel “Younger” written by Pamela Redmond Satran, and is produced and created by Darren Star. The starring actor Liza Miller is played by Sutton Foster, who fakes her age to get a job. Some of the co-stars in a significant supporting role in the first season include Nico Tortorella, Hillary Duff, Miriam Shor, and Debi Mazar. In the second season, Peter Hermann and Molly Bernard, who were in recurring roles in the first season, are regulars.
The show is set up in New York, and you see the transformation in Liza’s life as the TV show progresses. If you love Younger, you will love The Bold Type, New Girl, and Dead to Me. Discussed below are TV shows similar to younger worth giving a try, in no particular order.
The Bold Type
This show is a drama-comedy TV show revolving around the lives of three women, Jane, Kat, and Sutton, who are friends. These three friends work for a magazine called Scarlet, and they live in New York City.
The show gives the audience a glimpse into the love and personal life of the three best friends and shows how they lean on each other for support as they navigate their personal lives and careers where they have to find their voices. It shows how they explore their identity, sexuality, fashion, and love together.
The show starts with Jane starting her career as a new writer of Scarlet magazine after she has worked as an assistant and struggles to find her voice. Kat, the social media director at Scarlet, is secure in her job until she meets Adeana, a photographer, and begins exploring her sexuality. Lastly, Sutton is secretly seeing Richard Hunter, an attorney and a board member at Scarlet. Sutton also decides to change her career and lands a position as a fashion assistant for Scarlet.
Unlike the TV show Younger, no one conceals their age in The Bold Type, but you get a glimpse of women excelling in a career they love, workplace romance, and female friendship. As with the TV show Younger, it is entertaining to watch these women navigate their everyday life.
