30 TV Shows Similar to Supernatural

Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural aired in 2005 and ran for a whopping 15 seasons before it ended in 2020. The fantasy drama starred Jared Padalecki (as Sam Winchester), Jensen Ackles (as Dean Winchester), and Misha Collins (as Castiel).

When the Winchester boys were young, their mother was killed by an evil supernatural being. Their father trains his sons to follow in his footsteps on a quest for revenge, tracking down the responsible malignant force.

Years later, with a rift between the brothers, Dean shows up at Sam’s door with the news that their father has disappeared. What was supposed to be only a weekend journey to find John Winchester turned into years of road trips in a Chevrolet Impala fighting the world’s evil.

Many fans might have heard that there is a run-up spin-off in development. The show is believed to be centered on the love story of the brother’s parents, John and Mary Winchester.

1. Wynonna Earp

Based on the comic series written by Beau Smith,  Wynonna Earp aired in 2016 and starred Melanie Scrofano (as Wynonna Earp), Tim Rozon (as Doc Holliday), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (as Waverly Earp), and Katherine Barrell (as Nicole Haught). Much to the disappointment of the comics and the show’s fans, the TV series ends on season 4 (2021).

Following on with demon hunting expertise being handed down through generations, the show follows Wynonna Earp as she returns to her hometown to fulfill the destiny her great-great-grandfather has left for her – to send the Revenants back to Hell. 

2. Stranger Things

3. The X-Files

Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files was released in 1993. The sci-fi show ran for nine seasons (2001), season ten picked up fifteen years later (2016), and season eleven aired in 2018. At this point, it remains uncertain if another season will be produced. The show starred   Gillian Anderson (as Dana Scully), David Duchovny (as Fox Mulder), and Mitch Pileggi (as Walter Skinner).

FBI special agents Scully and Mulder investigate unsolved cases (found in the X-Files) that ordinary analytical methods cannot unravel. These cases involve paranormal activity and require an exceptional team to get to the bottom of the unusual occurrences.

The X-Files has won 15 Emmy Awards out of 61 nominations, including  Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (1996), Outstanding Guest Actor For A Drama Series (1996), Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series (1997), and Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series (2000).

Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired in 1997 and ran for seven seasons. The supernatural drama starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (as Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (as Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (as Willow Rosenberg), Anthony Head (as Rupert Giles), James Marsters (as Spike), and David Boreanaz (as Angel).

With the help of Giles (her Watcher) and her friends, Buffy fights between the lines of being an ordinary high school girl by day and killing the world’s evil by night. To quote Giles: “In every generation, there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer.”

Buffy was nominated for fourteen Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Makeup For A Series (1998) and Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (1998).

From the creators, Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt, Angel (a Buffy spin-off) aired in 1999 and starred David Boreanaz (as Angel), Alexis Denisof (as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce), and J. August Richards (as Charles Gunn). The series ended in 2004 after five seasons.

After putting Buffy and Sunnydale behind him, Angel is looking for a new start in Los Angeles. On a quest for redemption, he sets out to help the people of LA fight the supernatural forces.

Burge, Charmed was released in 1998 and ran for eight seasons; the supernatural show starred Holly Marie Combs (as Piper Halliwell), Alyssa Milano (as Phoebe Halliwell), Shannen Doherty (as Prue Halliwell), Rose McGowan (as Paige Matthews), Brian Krause (as Leo Wyatt), Julian McMahon (as Cole Turner), and on the final season, Kaley Cuoco (as Billy Jenkins).

The show follows the Halliwell sisters, a coven of white witches, as they use their gifts to fight the evil forces that threaten to destroy them and the ones they love. 

7. Charmed (2018)

From creators Constance M. Burge, Jessica O’Toole, and Amy Rardin, Charmed aired in 2018 and has been renewed for a fourth season which is rumored to hit the screens in 2022. The fantasy show stars Melonie Diaz (Mel Vera), Madeleine Mantock (as Macy Vaughn), Sarah Jeffery (as Maggie Vera), and Rupert Evans (as Harry Greenwood).

After the tragic loss of their mother, the three sisters discover that they are the Charmed Ones. Following on with the primary storyline of the 1998 version, the sisters stand together to face the forces of darkness.

8. Penny Dreadful

Created by John Logan, Penny Dreadful was released in 2014 and ran for three seasons. The Fantasy show starred Reeve Carney (as Dorian Gray), Timothy Dalton (as Sir Malcolm Murray), Eva Green (as Vanessa Ives), Rory Kinnear (as John Clare), Billie Piper (as Lily), Harry Treadaway (as Dr. Victor Frankenstein), and Josh Hartnett (as Ethan Chandler).

Set in Victorian London, a team made up of an explorer (Murry), a medium (Ives), a gunslinger (Chandler), and a scientist (Frankenstein) combine their unique talents to save Murry’s daughter and fight off the evil paranormal forces behind her capture.

9. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

The spin-off is another creation of John Logan, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels season one aired in 2020, starring Natalie Dormer (as Alex), Daniel Zovatto (as Tiago Vega), Nathan Lane (as Lewis Michener), Kerry Bishé (as Sister Molly Finnister), and Adriana Barraza (as Maria Vega). The show was not renewed for another season. 

Set in Los Angeles (1938), a detective (Vega) and his partner (Michener) have to solve a gruesome murder that intertwines the disturbing history of the City, its troubled present, and a force of supernatural beings.

10. Grimm

From creators Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt, and Jim Kouf, Grimm aired in 2011 and ran for six seasons. The fantasy show starred David Giuntoli (as Nick Burkhardt), Russell Hornsby (as Hank Griffin), Silas Weir Mitchell (as Monroe), and Sasha Roiz (as Captain Sean Renard).

Nick Burkhart, a homicide detective in Portland, discovers that he is from a long line of protectors called Grimms.  These protectors are responsible for keeping the Wessen (supernatural creatures) at bay and protecting humans from their wickedness.

11. American Horror Story

Created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, American Horror Story is another long-standing show. The series aired in 2011 with ten seasons to date and has been renewed for another three seasons in the future.

The show frequently stars Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe as new characters. Other stars include Lady Gaga, Emma Roberts, Matt Bomer, and Connie Britt. Each season is scripted as a standalone miniseries, and with every new season, new horror awaits.

American Horror story has been nominated for seventeen Emmy Awards and has won Outstanding Hairstyling For A Miniseries Or A Movie (2012) and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie (2012).

12. Warrior Nun

Based on the comic book written by Ben Dunn and created by Simon Barry, Warrior Nun hit the screen in 2020 and stars Alba Baptista (as Ava), Toya Turner (as Shotgun Mary), Kristina Tonteri-Young (as Sister Beatrice), Lorena Andrea (as Sister Lilith), and Tristán Ulloa (as Father Vincent). The show has been renewed for another season and is expected to be released at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

13. The Haunting of Hill House

Created by Mike Flanagan, The Haunting of Hill House (miniseries) aired in 2018 and ran for ten episodes. The horror show starred Timothy Hutton (as Hugh Crain), Carla Gugino (as Olivia Crain), Michiel Huisman (as Steven Crain), Elizabeth Reaser (as Shirley Crain), Kate Siegel (as Theodora Crain), Victoria Pedretti (as Nell Crain), and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (as Luke Crain).

In 1992, The Crain family moved into Hill House, a means to an end for building their dream house. However, their project is delayed, and the family learns of the paranormal horrors that live among them. The unearthly forces cause them to flee from the house, leaving their mother behind – who died in the house. Decades later, they return to face the horrors once more.

14. The Witcher

Based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski and created by Lauren Schmidt, The Witcher, aired in 2019 starring Henry Cavill (as Geralt of Rivia), Freya Allan (as Ciri), Anya Chalotra (as Yennefer), Anna Shaffer (as Triss), and Joey Batey (as Jaskier). Season two is set to be released in December 2021.

The fantasy shows follow Geralt of Rivia, a mighty monster hunter, through various life-threatening events as his past and present deliver him to his ultimate destiny; Ciri, the princess Cintran.

15. Lucifer

Created by Tom Kapinos, Lucifer hit the screens in 2016, and the final season (six) will air in September 2021. The show stars Tom Ellis (as Lucifer Morningstar), Lesley-Ann Brandt (as Mazikeen), Lauren German (as Chloe Decker), D.B. Woodside (as Amenadiel), and Rachael Harris (as Linda Martin).

Lucifer leaves Hell behind to run his nightclub (Lux) in Los Angeles. After a murder takes place outside of Lux, he is intrigued by homicide detective Chloe Decker and becomes a consultant for the LAPD. After an eternity of darkness, Lucifer experiences a glimmer of hope for his soul.

16. Evil

EVIL: Season One

Created by Michelle and Robert King, Evil aired in 2019 and appeared to have been renewed for a third season. The supernatural drama stars Katja Herbers (as Kristen Bouchard), Mike Colter (as David Acosta), and Aasif Mandvi (as Ben Shakir).

The show follows a team (Bouchard as a clinical psychologist, Acosta as a Catholic seminarian, and Shakir as a technology expert) investigating unusual occurrences to establish the occurrence of supernatural connections to the events.

17. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hit the screens in 2018, with the last season (four) concluded in December 2020. The show starred Kiernan Shipka (as Sabrina Spellman), Ross Lynch (as Harvey Kinkle), Lucy Davis (as Hilda Spellman), Miranda Otto (as Zelda Spellman), Chance Perdomo (as Ambrose Spellman), and Michelle Gomez (as Mary Wardwell).

Adapted from Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, the show follows Sabrina Spellman, the half-witch half-mortal, as she has to make a difficult decision on her 16th birthday. A choice between her mortal world or the witch world of her family. She has to navigate the thin line of being a teenager while battling evil forces that seek to destroy.

18. Warehouse 13

From creators Jane Espenson and D. Brent Mote, Warehouse 13 aired in 2009 and released five seasons. The sci-fi show starred Eddie McClintock (as Pete Lattimer), Joanne Kelly (as Myka Bering), Saul Rubinek (as Artie Nielsen), and Allison Scagliotti (as Claudia Donovan).

When Secret Service Agents Lattimer and Bering are assigned to Warehouse 13 (a place that safeguards artifacts), they soon realize that the artifacts hold more than just interesting history. The historical pieces are filled with powers, and in the wrong hands, could unleash catastrophic events.

19. Sleepy Hollow

Created by Phillip Iscove, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci, Sleepy Hollow was released in 2013 and ran for four seasons. The show starred Tom Mison (as Ichabod Crane), Lyndie Greenwood (as Jenny Mills), and Nicole Beharie (as Abbie Mills).

The supernatural series follows Crane as he pulled from 1781 to 2013 after he beheads a horseman under the command of George Washington. When the headless horseman trails him into the future, he has to solve the mystery that followed him with the help of detective Abbie Mills.

20. The Strain

Created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain was released in 2014 and run for four seasons. The fantasy show starred Corey Stoll (as Ephraim Goodweather), David Bradley (as Abraham Setrakian), Kevin Durand (as Vasiliy Fet), Miguel Gomez (as Augustin ‘Gus’ Elizalde), Jonathan Hyde (as Eldritch Palmer), and Richard Sammel (as Thomas Eichorst).

After the CDC is called in when a plane landed with dead passengers, they feared a deadly disease has landed along with them.  Dr. Goodweather and his team discover that the strain is an ancient form of vampirism, and it is infecting the people of New York.

21. Preacher

From creators Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, Preacher hit the screens in 2016. (The series was not renewed for a fifth season.) Starring  Dominic Cooper (as Jesse Custer), Joe Gilgun (as Cassidy), Ruth Negga (as Tulip O’Hare), and Ian Colletti (as Arseface).

The show follows Custer as he heads home to take over his dad’s church in Texas. After a paranormal event that gave him unimaginable powers, he enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend and a vagabond on his quest to find God.

22. The Magicians

Based on the novel written by Lev Grossman and created by Sera Gamble and John McNamara, The Magicians aired in 2015 and ended on season five. The fantasy show starred Jason Ralph (as Quentin Coldwater), Stella Maeve (as Julia Wicker), Hale Appleman (as Eliot Waugh), Arjun Gupta (as William ‘Penny’ Adiyodi), Summer Bishil   (as Margo Hanson), and Olivia Taylor Dudley (as Alice Quinn).

When the magic they read about in books becomes more than just a story, Coldwater and his friends are faced with the realization that magic poses a significant risk to the human world.

23. Shadow and Bone

24. Castlevania

Created by Warren Ellis and Adi Shankar Castlevania, aired in 2017, the series will not be renewed for a fifth season, but there are some whispers of a commissioned spin-off. Voice stars include Richard Armitage (as Trevor Belmont), James Callis (as Alucard) Alejandra Reynoso (as Sypha Belnades), and Theo James (as Hector).

The animated fantasy series follows a vampire hunter (Belmont) that has to save the city from Dracula’s revenge. With demons running rampant in the city, Belmont, Sypha, and Alucard join forces to defeat Dracula.

25. Hemlock Grove

Based on the book written by Brian McGreevy and created by Lee Shipman, Hemlock Grove aired in 2013 and concluded on season three. The show starred Famke Janssen (as Olivia Godfrey),  Bill Skarsgård (as Roman Godfrey), and Landon Liboiron (as Peter Rumancek).

The town of Hemlock Grove is full of secrets and mysterious people holding their own dark secrets; when a recent influx of murders threatens to expose their true natures, Peter and Roman team up to find some answers.

26. The Vampire Diaries

Based on the works of L.J Smith, created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, The Vampire Diaries aired in 2009 and ended after eight seasons. The paranormal drama starred Nina Dobrev (as Elena Gilbert), Steven R. 27. The Originals

The Originals: The Complete First Season

As a spin-off to The Vampire Diaries and created by Julie Plec, The Originals aired in 2013 and ran for five seasons. The paranormal series starred Joseph Morgan (as Klaus Mikaelson), Daniel Gillies (as Elijah Mikaelson), Charles Michael Davis (as Marcel Gerard), Phoebe Tonkin (as Hayley Marshall), Riley Voelkel (as Freya Mikaelson), and  Claire Holt (as Rebekah Mikaelson).

After the Mikaelsons left Mystic Falls, the thousand-year-old vampires return to New Orleans, the only place that truly felt like home to them. On return, they find that the French Quarter is not what it used to be, and they want the city back. However, not everyone is happy to have them back, and soon tensions escalate into wars.

28. Legacies

Legacies: The Complete First Season

Created by Julie Plec as a spin-off to The Originals, Legacies aired in 2018, with the fourth season set to hit the screens in October 2021. The show stars Danielle Rose Russell (as Hope Mikaelson), Aria Shahghasemi (as Landon Kirby),  Quincy Fouse (as Milton ‘MG’ Greasley), Matthew Davis (as Alaric Saltzman), Kaylee Bryant (as Josie Saltzman), and  Jenny Boyd (as Lizzie Saltzman).

Years after the loss of her parents, Hope Mikaelson is back in Mystic Falls, attending a school made especially for young supernatural beings (the Salvatore School teaches the teenagers to control their abilities). When creatures of legends suddenly appear at the school, the teachers and students have to figure out where they are coming from and how to defeat them.

29. From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series Season 1

Created by Robert Rodriguez, From Dusk Till Dawn was released in 2014 and ended on season three. The supernatural show starred D.J. Cotrona (as Seth Gecko),  Zane Holtz (as Richie Gecko),  Eiza González (as Santánico Pandemonium), Jesse Garcia (as Freddie Gonzalez), Madison Davenport (as Kate Fuller), and Brandon Soo Hoo (as Scott Fuller).

Based on the film written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Robert Rodriguez, From Dusk Till Dawn follows the Gecko brothers on the run after a bank robbery left a wake of dead bodies behind them.

30. Midnight, Texas

Based on the books written by Charlaine Harris and created by Monica Owusu-Breen, Eric C. Charmelo, and Nicole Snyder, Midnight, Texas, aired in 2017 and only made it to season two. The show starred François Arnaud (as Manfred Bernardo),  Dylan Bruce (as Bobo Winthrop), Parisa Fitz-Henley (as Fiji Cavanaugh), Arielle Kebbel (as Olivia Charity),  Jason Lewis (as Joe Strong), and Peter Mensah (as Lemuel Bridger).
