I went to an advanced screening of Burlesque tonight at Scotiabank Theater in downtown Montreal tonight and was surprised to see that the theater is offering a screening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 with D-Box technology. I must have missed something because I didn’t even know what D-Box technology was, but it turns out it’s motion seats that are used to enhance your cinematic experience.
Apparently Cineplex Entertainment will be installing about 250 D-Box Motion Seats in 10 theaters across Canada during the next year.
Claude McMaster, President & CEO, D-BOX Technologies Inc. discussed this expansion saying that “we are very proud of this agreement with [Cineplex], which will provide movie-goers across the country with the opportunity to experience our unique technology. This Canadian expansion will complement D-BOX’s foray into foreign markets while increasing visibility at home. More so, this significant milestone clearly demonstrates the attractiveness of our business model driven by the growing worldwide acceptance of our technology.”
To put things simply the technology is similar to what one might experience in an interactive movie-type ride at a theme park. There’s a tester version on the second floor of the downtown theater that shows how the seats shake and jolt in accordance with what’s happening in the film. Personally, I have mixed feelings because there are definitely pros and cons. For one, from what I read on the theaters marquee the technology will add another $8.00 to your ticket price, but I can’t shake my curiosity.
At the moment D-BOX seats will be an option with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, opening November 19th, and Tron Legacy, opening December 17th.
What this really means for me is that I’ll be “forced” to see Harry Potter again in order to test out the new tech since I already have my tickets. What are your thoughts? Do you think having a moving chair will improve or detract from your cinematic experience?
