Warner Bros. & Legendary Pictures has finally found a director for their American Godzilla movie, and who better than Gareth Edwards, the director of last year’s sci-fi hit Monsters. According to Heat Vision, Edwards will work with a yet-to-be-named writer in developing the script. Legendary Pictures gathered the rights to the project back in March 2010 but have since found trouble getting the film off the ground. Tim Burton was rumored to be circling the project, before deciding to develop a big screen adaptation of Monsterpocalypse instead, and Dave Callaham (The Expendables) was originally tapped to pen the script, until let go.
The British filmmaker, known for his art for creating stellar digital effects on a shoestring budget, has gained a lot of accolades of late with the release of his first feature. Monsters was devised, storyboarded and directed by Gareth Edwards himself, who also worked as the visual effects artist. The filming equipment cost approximately $15,000, with the budget coming in at under $500,000.For about 90% of the filming the crew comprised seven people transported in one van: so just imagine what the director can do with a much larger budget and film crew.
Monsters received generally positive reviews from critics and has been nominated for six British Independent Film Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Achievement in Production and eventually won the Best Director prize. It has also appeared at the number 8th spot of Sound On Sight’s “Best Films of 2010” list.
In addition to landing Godzilla, Edwards was also recently tapped to work alongside Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov in writing/directing a “futuristic sci-fi project.“
