Jodie Foster In and Out of Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Elysium’

Last month a Deadline exlusive claimed that Jodie Foster (The Brave One) had committed to writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi thriller Elysium, his last feature being 2009’s critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated sleeper hit District 9. Foster was said to be co-starring along side confirmed participants Matt Damon (The Adjustment Bureau, True Grit) and Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team 2010).

Cut back to the present, a month later and Jodie Foster has come forward herself and clarified that she has not signed any deals to appear in the film and any reports that suggest it are not true. In an interview with Empire magazine she had this to say about the situation at hand: “Actually, I’m not on that movie! I don’t know how that got out there. Well, I’m not not on it, but I’m not booked or involved in a deal yet. People want to jump the gun on Neill because he’s the new David Fincher or whatever. And I get why – I love him and District 9 was my favorite film of 2009. But we’re just not at that time in the process yet…”

So there you have it, it still isn’t a done deal whether Foster is on board or not but it sure would be nice to see her dip her toes into the sci-fi genre as she has had little to no appearances in that area before. In any case, much of the plot is still being kept under wraps but is said to be set on a distant planet and  unrelated to District 9.  Sony Pictures recently picked up the distribution rights to Elysium and Blomkamp expressed his elation by issuing this statement: “I literally could not be happier.  I have a brilliant relationship with Sony. I loved them during District 9, they 100% get this film and they get me. Elysium is in very good hands.” Next up for Foster though is the comedy-drama The Beaver with Mel Gibson out in May.
