Sadly, I like many others didn’t discovered the incredibly funny Starz comedy Party Down until after it was cancelled. I can’t speak for others, but it is hard to have access to many of the hit U.S. TV shows living here in Montreal. With that said I burned through the first and only two seasons in less than three days. How else do you think I developed such a huge crush on star Adam Scott?
This half-hour comedy follows a Los Angeles, California, catering team for the titular company. The sextet of aspiring Hollywood actors and writers, as well as drifting lost souls, work small-time catering gigs while hoping for their break or some positive change in their lives. Perhaps the best aspect of the show (aside from the fantastic scripts), was that each episode finds the team working a new event, in a new local, and inevitably getting tangled up with new colourful, affluent guest appearances each and every week including: Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Alona Tal, Ed Begley, Jr., Daran Norris, Ryan Devlin, Martin Yu, Michael Kostroff, Steve Guttenberg and Joey Lauren Adams
Now much like Arrested Development, it seems the creators may be working on taking the show to the big screen. Producer Rob Thomas recently announced that a movie deal was in the works during a Q&A held at the Alamo Drafthouse’s this past weekend.
“People are talking to us about doing a Party Down movie. We are pretty far down the deal-making process with that, so we’re hopeful that there will be a Party Down movie. Ideally, if it works out we could be shooting in television hiatus time next spring. Hopefully that deal will close, and we’ll all tweet about it when it does”.
Party Down was six years in the making, with many of the ideas for the episodes conceptualized years before the show was made, so what does that say about the possibility of a feature length film? We’ve heard this story time and time again with the likes of 24, The Sopranos, Arrested Development and even Veronica Mars, but more often than not, it never actually happens. Personally I think it is a great idea and here’s hoping it will.
