Recently Adam McKay, the writer/director of Anchorman, tweeted that Paramount has passed up the opportunity to budget Anchorman 2.
“So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.”
Along with that “sad” news, Ben Stiller tweeted that Zoolander 2 was being passed up as well by Paramount.
“Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander looking to appear in sequels. Both men destitute, without means or intellect to fund their own comebacks.”
More developing news on these films have come into play whether these sequels can actually get produced for the right price.
Could we see these sequels happen? According to Deadline, light has been shed on these limbo pieces and apparently if both films can get their budget down to $40 million than the studio will perhaps rework these films into production. From Deadline, they report in that the budget for Anchorman 2 was clocked in somewhere around $70 million. So that is a big chunk out of budget to get the ball rolling. Seems like almost not worth the time. But hey, if District 9 can do what it did for only around $33 million, then I think they can cut their budget and man child Ferrell could actually try to give us something good for once. The studio also sees this going horribly for the foreign market with Anchorman: $85m US / $5m foreign and Zoolander: $45m US / $15 foreign.
