The museum will feature Star Wars and Lucasfilm memorabilia, paintings from the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries, including a collection of Norman Rockwell works, cinematic fashion exhibits and numerous interactive displays demonstrating the capabilities of digital, cinematic storytelling through animation.
In renaming the museum to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Lucas said in a promotional video that the museum will be a family orientated opportunity for kids to engage and play with tools and discover how to tell stories and create art through using them. He adds that digital artists from Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and Pixar will be on hand to teach digital animation courses to kids.
“One of the great things about this museum will be people starting to understand what digital art really is, learn more about the tools, get excited, get inspired and get your hands dirty in the digital art world,” said Pixar’s John Lasseter in a promotional video for the museum.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants the museum to be located in a current empty lot between the Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field and McCormick Place, but Chicago ABC 7 News reported that there may yet be fights as to the museum’s final location.
The museum plans to open in 2018.
