Doctor Who Season 7 Not Until 2013?

Fan rejoiced last week when it was announced Doctor Who was picked up for a seventh season of 14 episodes (most likely 13 episodes in addition to a Christmas Special which is par for the course) while star Matt Smith would be returning as well.

But now fans have a reason to pout as it is still up in the air when this latest announced season of episodes will hit television. Io9 has word via Twitter that Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One was quoted as saying “…there won’t be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013.”

It still remains to be seen what exactly that means, whether episodes will be spread out through 2012 and 2013 (much like the current season) in addition to individual specials throughout 2012 or perhaps the entire seventh season will be pushed back to 2013 for the series 50th anniversary and make room solely for specials in 2012. Without official word from the BBC or showrunner Steven Moffat, audiences will just have to wait and see when they can get their Who fix. In present anticipation, the 2nd half of the sixth season is set to air in Fall 2011.
