Doug Liman To Direct “All You Need Is Kill”

The Bourne Identity and Mr & Mrs Smith director Doug Liman is set to direct the time-travel actioner All You Need is Kill, says Variety. The movie, based on the Japanese novel of the same name, has been in development for a few months now.

In a recent interview at http://www.collider.com/ Liman had this to say:

“It’s an amazing script.  It’s a wholly original piece of writing.  It delivers all of the whiz-bang satisfaction of a big Hollywood effects movie, but it does it in a completely original way.”

The novel was breakthrough for it’s author Hiroshi Sakurazaka earning wide praise from fellow novelists including Yasutaka Tsutsui and Chōhei Kanbayashi and was a entered in contention for the Seiun Awards, Japan’s version of the Nebula Award. The story is told from the first person point of view of the protagonist Keiji Kiriya. Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, fighting against the mysterious creatures called ‘Mimics’ which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in a time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji’s skills as a soldier grows as he passes through the time loops trying to change his fate.
