Even though this book has been dropping once a month like clockwork, so far anyway, the wait between issues has been excruciating. It may have only debuted two months ago, yet the tale of Gilad Anna-Padda is so expertly handled that writer Greg Pak has created a monster with his fans. But does Pak’s lightning remain trapped in its epic bottle, or are some crack starting to shine in the warriors armour?
After declaring a war on the gods last month, Gilad and his daughter Xaran head to the local K-Mart to stock up on some munitions. After some father-daughter bonding, the kind that only two immortal warriors could have, the two head out in search of Buck the geomancer who had betrayed the both of them. Yet Buck has some information and the true enemy may not be as clear as they once thought.
So does Pak continue his hot streak? Yes and then some. Pak’s mastery of epic storytelling has only become more refined in his later years. He understands that a wide scope means nothing unless its fixated on something meaningful. Here, he let’s the readers into the hearts of two seasoned warriors cursed by the gift of immortality. While the story may be spanning centuries, its message about the cycle of violence never gets muddles within the spectacle.
While Pak’s story hold strong, the decision to split the artist between flashbacks doesn’t work quite as well as it did in the last issue. The reason the switch worked so well previously was due to the different styles of each artist. This time, the switch isn’t nearly as noticeable, yet in a negative way. It’s like someone switched your Coke for Pepsi, it looks the same, but the taste couldn’t be more different. However, this doesn’t detract from the overall experience, and the sight of Xaran going full berserk mode is extremely satisfying.
Now three issues in, Eternal Warrior continues to cement its place as the most epic book on the shelves. Hopefully they drop the dual artists soon and continue showcasing the strengths of Trevor Hairsine.
