Keanu Reeves in a new action franchise? It may not go to that level, but the directors of one of his most recent films is thinking sequel already.
Speaking with Movies.com on Wednesday, John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch confirmed that they are currently working on story ideas for a sequel to the surprise action hit. The first film found Keanu Reeves as John Wick and had the actor coming out of retirement as a hitman to settle a score.
“We’re in development right now,” they said. “We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it”
“Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”
John Wick was a surprise hit with the film bringing in nearly $43 million domestically and $78 million worldwide. Our own J.R. Kinnard called the film “a beautiful ballet of death and destruction” and “a testament to testosterone.”
No word yet when a sequel would happen since both Stahelski and Leitch are being eyed to helm Cowboy Ninja Viking with Chris Pratt attached to star.
John Wick is now available on Blu-ray.
