Mandate Pictures and Sam Raimi won a bidding war last week against Warner Bros. and David Yates (Harry Potter) for the rights package to The Day of the Triffids. Raimi will produce the remake with his long time partner Robert Tapert.
According to Deadline, Sam Raimi has been a fan of the film since childhood, and he’d like to direct the remake. If that’s true, and he does direct the project I’d be very excited to see it. The rights package doesn’t include a script, but it does have the rights to the novel by John Wyndham.
The Day of the Triffids is about the protagonist, Bill, surviving in a post-apocalyptic society. After a mysterious meteor shower blinds all who had seen it, Bill, whose eyes were covered by bandages in the hospital at the time, emerges into a new world filled with mysterious plants and tries to cope with the changes,
