It was announced November of last year that Netflix will turn Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events into a live-action TV series. And now there’s finally more news about the project, reminding fans that yes, this is actually happening.
The Wrap reported yesterday that Barry Sonnenfeld (director of every Men in Black film) and Mark Hudis (True Blood executive producer) have signed on to the project. Sonnenfeld will direct and executive produce along with Hudis, who has also been deemed the series showrunner. And fans will be pleased to know that Lemony Snicket himself (AKA Daniel Handler) will also serve as an executive producer, proving that this adaptation has his full seal of approval.
As a reminder, the A Series of Unfortunate Events book series revolves around orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sonny Baudelaire, who are put under the care of their evil uncle, Count Olaf. And as the title suggests, these characters go through a large number of not-so-great situations for 13 books. With the 2004 film adaptation being a disappointment to most fans, they now hope that Netflix will be able to create something much more faithful and fantastically dark.
No other pre-production news has been revealed yet, but it’s good to know that the project is making some headway. Let’s hope the news keeps coming, especially in the form of a cast list.
