“It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
The press conference he was speaking at was to announce a new partnership between Nintendo and DeNA, a Japanese mobile game specialist, with the specific aim of creating various mobile games based on Nintendo IPs. Should fans expect to see Mario appearing on the App Store in the near future?
More interestingly, however, was the further announcement that Nintendo are planning to launch a membership service across various hardware, include mobile devices and PC. It’s likely the recent dismantling of Club Nintendo was to make way for this, and hopefully signals the end of device-specific accounts.
If Nintendo are prepping to unveil the “NX” next year, it’s unlikely gamers will be able to get their hands on the console before 2017 at the earliest. As for the “brand new concept”, well, that could be anyone’s guess – but knowing what’s come before there will no doubt be many hoping the company moves away from divisive control schemes or bulky peripherals. Could the partnership with DeNA hint at the much-rumoured handheld/console hybrid? Only time will tell.
