‘Adventure Time’ #50 is very continuity heavy

With a plot steeped deep in Adventure Time lore, Adventure Time #50 wasn’t for me, but more knowledgeable fans may get a kick out of it. The comic is technically sound though with creative lettering from Steve Wands to show how overblown and melodramatic the Lich is, bright and spooky colors from Maarta Laiho, and fun, expressive art from Ian McGinty. If you like a certain type of pet or hero cycles, the last few pages will be a treat.

Snow is Rarer Than Gold in ‘Snowfall’ #1

A number one issue is a tough thing to figure out, especially when building your own world as Joe Harris and Martín Morazzo are doing in Snowfall #1. The balancing act between setting up your story and characters, while maintain the mystery and intrigue that will draw them back for issue two is maybe one of the most difficult things to do in comics.

Kicks and Sabers Fly in ‘Darth Maul: Apprentice’ Fan-Film

It was just the other day while browsing a Wal-Mart toy section that a friend and I remarked upon how easy it is to find an action figure of Constable Zuvio, a character entirely cut from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Meanwhile, plastic representations of Rey, the main character of the film, are considerably harder to …

Cracked Video Pokes Fun at the Terrible, Terrible Idea of an R-Rated ‘Batman vs Superman’ Cut. Because it’s a Terrible Idea.

From that title you can probably already get an idea of what my stance is on the recent news that Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will be receiving an R-rated cut for its blu-ray release. Like many vocal fans on the internet, the very idea of an R-rated movie featuring Batman and/or Superman seems ridiculous to …

‘Heavy Rain’ PS4 Remaster Is Offensively Bad

Before I explain why Heavy Rain’s PS4 remaster is a blatant attempt to rake in some cash under the pretense of archaic and borderline unethical PR sleight-of-hand, let me first admit that I love Heavy Rain. I think it holds up to this day, not just visually, but also mechanically. Even despite the plethora of negative …

A Rebel Jail and An Imperial War Highlight February 2016’s Star Wars Comics

Like Darth Vader #16, this issue picks up on threads left over from “Vader Down”, helping make that crossover feel more like a part of the overall narrative and not just a one-off stunt. It also features Sana Starros, the character introduced as Han’s wife in the series’ second story arc, which also helps add to the impression that these issues are part of a larger whole, and not just a series of self-contained stories.

Sun Valley Film Fest 2016: ‘My Friend’s Rubber Ducky’ is a very funny absurdist comedy with dark undertones

My Friend’s Rubber Ducky Written and directed by Josh Hyde 74 min, USA, 2016 World Premiere There are two very different possible reactions to My Friend’s Rubber Ducky, which premiered last night at the Sun Valley Film Fest. Opposing reactions can often be a sign of good art. On the one hand, I would …

‘Predator: Life and Death’ #1 Checks All the Bloody Boxes

Predator: Life and Death isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel, here. (A group of trigger-happy, battle-hardened military types touching down on a far-off planet, totally unprepared for the alien predators they’ll find lurking there? You’d be forgive if you feel like you’ve seen this movie once or twice or six times.) But I’m encouraged by the total competence with which this creative team checks all the boxes of a good Predator adventure. And with three issues left in this arc–and with sixteen parts left in Dark Horse’s new Xenoverse story cycle–there’s plenty of time left to stop checking boxes and do something outside the box.

‘Army of Darkness’ hits the ‘Furious Road’ with new miniseries

As an introduction, Army of Darkness: Furious Road sets out to do its job without getting too bogged down in the details. Collins and Baal dive right into the action, setting up this interesting team of characters on a mission to find the Necronomicon and to fight off Deadites while doing so. By choosing to wait on bringing Ash in, it gives more of an idea of what the universe is like outside of him while giving the other characters a chance to shine. The only question is will it remain that way once everyone’s favorite screwhead Ash becomes a major player in the next issue.
