‘Batgirl Vol. 2: Family Business’ Balances Crime-Fighting and Relationships

While Batgirl is an effective detective and crime-fighter, and her fights with villains are a blast, that’s only half of the story. The other half is her relationships with her friends, her father, and her love interests. Although anyone could easily enjoy Batgirl, the title is acutely suited for teen girls and young women.

Gotham, Ep. 2.12, “Mr. Freeze” cometh to warm up next-level criminality

While “Mr. Freeze” takes a great deal to set up this new upcoming arc rather than thoughtfully explore the title character’s predicament, it still is able to quickly establish Mr. Freeze’s situation, present his motivation, and display the extent of his powers to a great degree.

No Pressure, More Diamonds: The Case for Releasing Summer Blockbusters Even Earlier

It was one of those moments that inspired a few eye rubs and maybe a double take or two. Not that it wasn’t slightly expected, but the magnitude could not have been foreseen. This past Valentine’s Day weekend it seemed that summer decided to come a few months earlier when Tim Miller’s Deadpool made …

The Oscars are broken, and Best Original Score is the safest way to fix them

It’s the eve of the 88th Academy Awards, which means we’re up to our necks in Oscar prognostication. Will Leo finally nab that Best Actor award? Is Mad Max: Fury Road getting any recognition? Scream Factory release: ‘Millennium’ and ‘R.O.T.O.R.’

Quite the dichotomous release, this one. Millennium, odd shift in tone notwithstanding, is surprisingly easy to recommend. R.O.T.O.R …less so. There are indeed people out there that eat this stuff up, the film fans that go crazy over truly god-awful movies. How else does one explain the fact that The Room keeps getting played every now and then in repertoire cinemas? More power to them, and they’ll probably be delighted to check out R.O.T.O.R on blu-ray. For everybody else, Millennium is the reason to pick up this release.

What Hollywood Should Learn From Deadpool

Essentially, Fox has nothing to lose by playing it safe, but apparently they don’t have much to lose by backing the ugly underdog, either. The best case scenario? The improbable success of Deadpool gives Fox a mandate to make superhero media weirder, smarter, and more subversive. Worst case: we get another Avengers clone with more sex and blood. Both scenarios make Fox a boatload of box-office money, so why not get a little weird?

Film Fury #48: ‘The Tale of Zatoichi’ terrific qualities are very obvious for all to see

By the film’s end, there is little wonder that Daei wanted to beat the iron while it was hot and make more Zatoichi films. The original movie is highly engaging for its worthwhile cast and just as entertaining for the vast array of personalities that populate this universe. To cap it off, when the action erupts, it pays off for the patience asked of the viewers, not to mention that Zatoichi himself successfully comes across as a absolute death machine when prompted to.

Pokespective, Part 1: Introduction and the Beginning

In 1998, I was first introduced to Pokemon. I don’t remember exactly how I had first heard of it, but I do remember a few highlights. I remember a classmate bringing his Game Boy to school and showing the game off, letting other kids catch and name a Pokemon or two to show them how …

Eddie the Eagle Written by Sean Macaulay and Simon Kelton Directed by Dexter Fletcher U.K., 2016 Fresh off of the success of Kingsman: The Secret Service, few would have expected Matthew Vaughn to pluck the young star from that film (Taron Egerton) and produce a film about Great Britain’s first Olympic ski-jumper. What killed ‘Final Fantasy’

When I start an article off with a title like “What Killed Final Fantasy”, I can only assume that some readers will agree that it’s dead and be intrigued, some readers will be offended at my insult to their favourite gaming franchise, and the rest will be Square Enix’s current demographic: the artistically blind. Final …
