There’s a long, storied history of Hollywood films being turned into Broadway musicals, none quite so much as animated classics such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. One of the more recent Hollywood-to-Broadway transplants is none other than DreamWorks Animation’s 2001 hit Shrek, which was turned into Shrek the Musical. For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to either see the show on Broadway or in its touring edition, you won’t have to wait much longer to check this out for yourself. Shrek the Musical is lumbering its way onto Blu-ray and DVD this Octogre…uh, October. (October 15, to be precise.)
The award-winning production of Shrek the Musical was shot live on Broadway and directed by Michael Warren, featuring such Broadway stalwarts as Brian D’Arcy James as Shrek, Sutton Foster as Fiona, and Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad. (Remember, kids, for some fun, say Lord Farquaad’s name real fast. It’ll impress your parents! Or make them very mad. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.) The Shrek the Musical Blu-ray/DVD combo also has a few special features that go behind the scenes of the making of this stage production, as well as a sing-along feature for the whole family. It’s a couple of months away, but you can start the countdown now: Shrek the Musical will be on the shelves on October 15. (See, this time, we didn’t say Octogre. Except for just now.)
