Life After Kojima: Where can ‘Metal Gear’ go from here?

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain marked what could possibly be the final Metal Gear game with Hideo Kojima’s involvement. However, Konami has stated that the Metal Gear franchise is far from over. That’s right, the universe of Metal Gear will live on and not just in pachinko form. But where could Konami take the …

‘Metal Gear Solid V’: From tight corridors to open worlds

Metal Gear Solid has traditionally been about successive corridors, lengthy cinematics, and narrative inertia. Each military compound, ruined city, or virgin forest would lead to the next and players would run or crawl or tiptoe headlong into an epic finale. Environments would be interactive and dense with secrets, but they would also be small and …

Who’s the Boss?: Ranking the ladies of ‘Metal Gear Solid’

There’s been a lot of controversy over the appearance of the new character, Quiet, in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Despite claims series creator Hideo Kojima that there’s a good reason narratively for the sniper’s hooker-like attire, many gamers remain skeptical. Having not reached her in the game yet, I can’t comment, but I can comment on the other ladies in the series.

‘Metal Gear Solid’ is a striking and memorable experience

I was rather late getting into the videogame scene. Despite time spent at friends’ houses playing Sonic and Donkey Kong Country on their Mega Drive and SNES, it wasn’t until much later – when the PlayStation was well and truly established – that I finally got on board. Games like Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider were great fun, and helped reinforce the all-important playground notion that twelve-year-old-me had picked the ‘right’ console (‘N64 still uses cartridges and can’t get proper FMV!’ we chanted).

‘Silent Hill 2’ molds a clever and disturbing narrative

The first Silent Hill game introduced us to a very different version of the survival horror genre we had come to know. Silent Hill would come to shake up that formula dramatically.
