The townspeople finally learn of the location of the mammoth carcass, as Dan is forced to make a difficult choice and reconciliations are made in a strong first season finale for the show.
As the truth comes out about the circumstances surrounding Billy Pettigrew’s death, more information about the effects of the mysterious disease reveal themselves, while Yuri and Max make their own play for the mammoth graveyard in a compelling episode.
No Good Deed is directed by Sam Miller of BBC’s Luther, and he knows how to take typical archetypes and work them around his leading man. Memorable villains like Hannibal Lector and Patrick Bateman are all too common for white actors, but, with the exception of Denzel Washington, black actors rarely get those parts. Actors of Elba’s caliber should at least get the chance to play a quality scoundrel.
We’re now at the halfway point of Black Sails’ freshman season, and while certain characters and stories need better treatment, “IV.” is a great bounce-back episode in which the secondary figures of the series get to shine.
“II.” largely begins to address some of those concerns, and while there is still a lot of work to be done with central figures like John Silver and Charles Vane, the rest of the group is starting to become much more recognizable as characters and not just people who are on the screen.
