Television that Home Video Forgot: Reaper (2007)

Reaper has the kind of premise that could’ve gone on for much longer than it was given. Ideally it would’ve been the M*A*S*H of supernatural shows with Ray Wise as the Hawkeye constant, where after a cycle they could get a new group for the Devil to play with. Unfortunately, the show got the axe before it could even properly close out the Sam era. Hopefully, Fazekas & Butters will be able to get enough pull to someday revive the show again and bring closure to the story they began with Sam and the Devil. There is a chance that this could happen now more than ever before, being that there has been a recent trend of TV show revivals surfacing as of late. As it is, Reaper is still a really entertaining show that is quality and warrants a place in your collection.

Jane the Virgin, Ep. 2.01, “Chapter Twenty-Three”

Season two of Jane the Virgin has brought about a lot of changes for the show, but what’s clearest in “Chapter Twenty-Three” is that creator Jennie Snyder Urman and her team know exactly who these characters are, and how they relate to one another and the world that Jane the Virgin has created.

Listen to “The Sexy Getting Ready Song” from Rachel Bloom’s new series ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’

Comedic singer Rachel Bloom has been a familiar face on the internet for a number of years, garnering a reputation for unexpectedly oddball songs that work in both a comedic and musical context. Television that Home Video Forgot: The Secret Circle (2011)

Although The Secret Circle didn’t last very long, it did have a good run and a standout performance by Phoebe Tonkin, which fans of hers should definitely check out this show. Currently there are a fair amount of shows that feature vampires, zombies and even werewolves, but still very few that feature witches as the main focus. As far as supernatural shows featuring witches, this is one of the better ones that offers an interesting take on the idea of witches and covens. One of the best things to be said about the show is that it has genuinely good production value with well executed special effects.

Television that Home Video Forgot: Emily Owens, M.D. (2012)

The legacy that is left in the wake of Emily Owens, MD’s demise could be found in Jennie Snyder Urman’s follow up television series Jane the Virgin. Urman wanted to fit her sensibility into a medical drama template but was limiting her creativity by playing too closely to the format. Her vision of an Ally McBeal-esque tone did not come through in Emily Owens, MD as one could imagine she had intended, as Jane the Virgin is much clearly Urman embracing her unique writing style without restraint. This show is still a very good effort by Urman as it is skillfully written and presented, yet the flaws exist mostly for being too generic to be noticed, which is mistake that Urman has certainly not repeated.

“We Can Be Heroes”: On Jane The Virgin and Invisibility in Media

Jane the Virgin, Ep. 1.14 to 1.18 turns the focus to character relationships

While the plot hasn’t suffered, the recent run of Jane the Virgin has turned the attention mainly on how the characters relate to each other, whether it’s seemingly unconnected people like Rogelio and Michael or duos with a bitter history like Rafael and Petra, and the show has benefited from it.
