5) Jay Stansfield “Building A Shield”
Directed by Jay Stansfield
The latest from Jay Stansfield kicks off this week’s 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week. “Building A Shield” is an interestingly shot video that explores the sensitive subject of child neglect. Although the video mostly follows the child (featuring some beautiful shots in the woods), there are some excellent framed shots of Stansfield himself.
4) Lightning Dust “Diamond”
Directed by Helen Reed
It took me a while to figure out why I was initially drawn to this music video. I figured it was so mundane and uncreative, it made it stand out somehow. It’s a pretty different reason to include it in this top 5 list but I’m going for it. What really struck me was how low the lighting was when swimming pools are usually bright. The slow pace kind of goes with the song that really has an 80s feel to it.
3) Spose “I’m Starving”
Directed by Jason Bosch
When asked about this video, Maine-born rapper Spose said: “We woke up at like 3 am to get out on the ocean on a boat for sunrise. And we’re probably gonna get sued by PETA but whatever. Shit came out looking amazing.” That it did.
2) Theodore Grams “Dogtown”
Directed by Strategem Pictures
Sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy a music video without analysing or thinking too much about it. “Dogtown” features some really interesting shots that feel like they have just been randomly thrown together. There’s something really engaging about it though. Despite the fact that I don’t really like the song, the visuals somehow work. Strongly driven by editing techniques and tricks, it’s a treat to the eye.
1) She & Him “I Could Have Been Your Girl”
Directed by Zooey Deschanel
If you’ve been feeling blue since the New Girl finale, the latest from Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward will certainly put a smile back on your face. Taken from their fantastic latest release, “I Could Have Been Your Girl” is a cute 60s influenced video directed by Miss Deschanel herself.
